EVH

Edward Van Halen Frankenstein™ Replica Limited Edition Electric Guitar (E5150000X)

Eddie Van Halen and Fender have joined forces to bring you EVH® brand guitars, amps and musical products, beginning with a most eagerly awaited musical event: the unveiling of a 300-instrument limited edition run of the Eddie Van Halen Frankenstein™ replica guitar.

This red, black and white ash-body guitar has been put through an astounding aging process to replicate the original down to every last scratch, ding and cigarette burn. Fender craftsmen even scoured the land for 1971 quarters—just like the original Eddie at one time stuck under the original tremolo bridge—to mount near the Floyd Rose® Original tremolo bridge. The guitar features a Seymour Duncan® Custom Shop EVH® humbucking pickup, a single master volume knob (that says “Tone”) mounted on a partial black pickguard identical to the original. Leaving no stone unturned, the guitar is complete with a non-functional three-way switch and single-coil pickup that occupy two of the three pickup routs.

It’s a phenomenally crafted piece of rock history—of guitar history, period—and it could only come from Eddie Van Halen and the talented resources of Fender. It simply must be seen, heard and felt to be believed, and it will re-evoke the awestruck wonder and sheer thrill you experienced the first time you saw, heard and felt the incredible musical power of Eddie Van Halen.

Accurate appointments include:
  • Ash body is aged and worn exactly where Eddie's is
  • Unfinished maple neck with wear and burns
  • Truck reflectors cracked just like on Eddie's guitar
  • Schaller tuners even reveal where the original tuners were first mounted
  • Locking Floyd Rose Original tremolo with 1971 quarter underneath
  • Partial pickguard with single volume knob labeled Tone
  • Single Seymour Duncan Custom Shop EVH humbucking pickup
  • Non-functional switch and single coil pickup in upper pickup routs
  • Pick holder made of masking tape
  • Striping patterns are identical to Eddie's guitar
  • Strap hooks just like Eddie's
  • Irregularly chiseled lower pickup rout to accomodate the string spacing of the humbucking pickup

PRS GUITARS

PRS Guitars Introduces New Model – The Mira

More than 700 guitar enthusiasts made the trek to Maryland this weekend for the company’s first “Experience PRS” open house where, the Mira, PRS’ newest guitar model, was unveiled. Paul Reed Smith and Michael Ault from the PRS Band unofficially unveiled the new PRS model on stage during an open house performance Friday night at the PRS manufacturing facility in Stevensville.

Skillet Guitarist Ben Kasica said, “I've been using the Mira the last week of shows. I love it. It plays amazing, and the sound is perfect for the songs I use it on. It has that retro, classic rock vibe with the playability of a modern PRS guitar.”

Latin for “wonderful,” Mira is also the name of an unusually fast moving star located approximately 350 light years from earth. The PRS Mira model is a 24 fret guitar that features a 25” scale length, 10” radius, regular or wide-thin neck shape, locking tuning pegs, PRS non-adjustable stoptail, Abalone moons inlays, optional bird inlays, East Indian rosewood fingerboard, a solid mahogany body and neck, Mira treble and bass pickups, volume, tone, 3-way blade switch and mini toggle coil tap. The Mira model is offered in range of colors including Vintage Cherry, Orange, Vintage Mahogany, Black, Wild Mint, Lilac, Seafoam Green, Powder Blue and Sandstorm.

PRS Director of R&D and Private Stock Joe Knaggs said, “The Mira is a good example of a great concerted effort between peers in marketing, R&D and production who have been working together for a long time. Our goal was to make a guitar that feels, looks and sounds different but keeps the quality, playability and unique PRS attributes. We wanted the Mira to have the feel of a flat top electric yet have the unique beauty of a carved guitar.”

Peter Wolf, PRS Director of Sales and Marketing added, “To me, the Mira is giving PRS a greater opportunity to appeal to a younger audience, Indie Bands and players who are looking for different things in a guitar. It has a strong vintage and retro vibe to it, and the Mira model has already been creating quite a bit of excitement within our work force and amongst the few Artists we have been able to show it to.”

“The Mira is a new direction for PRS – flat body, pick guard, new pickups, 24 fret, retro looking vintage style guitar,” said Paul Reed Smith, “but first and foremost, it is a wonderful sounding Maryland-built instrument.”

JOE SATRIANI GUITAR METHODS

Joe Satriani Guitar Methods.

I am a guitar teacher living in the UK, I have studied many diciplins and am compitent at many styles. This article is a tribute to someone who has influenced me greatly and in my oppinion is a living legend -- Joe Satriani.

Introduction

Joe Satriani along with his most famous pupil Steve Vai have reveloutionised modern rock guitar in much the same way that Hendrix did in the '60s. As a guitar player who has been a keen follower of the instrument for 15 years now it increacingly angers me that these musicians are not given the credit that they diserve. Satriani for example regularly looses to guitarists such as Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash. Although the afformentioned names are both acomplished musicians to varying degrees in their own right they are quite simply not in the same musical league as Satch and it is a tragedy that in our modern times such incredible devotion to the mastery of the instrument can go largely unoticed by the general public. It is understandable that artists such as Yingwie Malmsteen or Michael Angelo.

Practical Analysis

Joe Satriani is proficient in every exotic rock technique that I personally can name. Just because you can't do this and you probably don't know anyone else who can dosen't mean you never will be able to. All it takes is the dedication. In order to analyse his technique it is best to start from the basics. I'm going to assume a basic understanding of guitar terminoligy.

1. Legato

Legato is the latin term for smoothly. In guitar terms it basically means playing with hammerons and pull offs. Joe's legato technique is very fluid. He has achived this level of fluidity through metronome practice of scale shapes. He has also payed close attention to his left hand tecnique. If you observe his left hand especially his 4th finger they will always stay very close to the finger board of the guitar and will prempt the next section thus his fingers are always close to where they need to be therefore he can play faster. If you are to achive this in your playing you will need to slow down drastically. Little finger movement is the bane of many average guitarists technique and is how you can spot a professional. Make sure you put in the hours so you can control all your fingers even if they aren't fretting notes.

If you wish to achive this try learning patterns within scales such as those used in the introduction to Steve Vai and David Lee Roth "Shyboy." If you can play the introduction on that song up to speed then you are proficient with the technique. Once you have mastered that try the run down after the pick tapping on "Surfin' With The Alien."

Tips: for "Shyboy" intro and "SWTA" section metioned above plus futher general exercises.
  • Practice on - Clean - Listen to mistakes.
  • Practice to a metronome start with a tempo you can easily manage increace that by 2-5 bpm per day to start with. As it gets faster decreace the increace.
  • Listen carefully to the fluidity of your legato technique.
  • Warm up excersise. Make sure you practice every finger combination. A great exercise to test even advandced players get a pen and paper write down every combination of the numbers 123 and 4 1234 1324 1432... Not just starting with 1 either and then practice in leagato in every position from say fret 2 to 12 on every string as many of these shapes as you can (using a metronome). The cromatic patterns they create on the fretboard are a lot trickier than they look!

Practice through this section daily and find more pieces that rely heavily on legato try playing Yingwie Malmsteen "Blitzkrieg" with legato.

2. Advanced Whammy Techniques

Joe satriani uses his floyd rose for extreme pitch changes harmonic whales flicks and vibrato. He uses these to great effect in a large number of his compositions. Extreme pitch variations can be found in many of the songs on the surfin with the alien album flicks can be found on the song surfin with the alien and floyd rose vibrato on many of his compositions.

Tips:

  • Play a note then try and hit that note from another much higher or lower using your whamy bar. Or better still get a recording of notes playing and hit them with your whammy bar.
  • Practice widening and tightening the vibrato around a note using your whammy bar.
  • Practice hitting natural harmonics and then bending them to different pitches in time to a metronome.
  • The whammy bar can be used to effectively manipulate feedback.

3. Advanced Tapping Techniques

Joe's tapping techniques are far above average. Althogh some acousitc artists have taken these techniques to the extreme Joe has much to teach us about advanced tapping. The first case study is in "Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing." Try learning the section in the 'verse' (1:35). The proper technique to do this is to use your right hand to deaden the strings at about the 4th fret making sure not to hit any natural harmonics and then use your legato to play the arpeggio. Start it very slowly it is very difficult indeed (50 bpm).

An example of another advanced tapping technique utilised by joe satriani can be found in the song "Midnight." In this song he uses multiple fingers on the right and left hand to play arpeggios and extended chords. This technique is a hell of a party trick and I would strongly advise learning this song as it is a great introduction to multi-fingered tapping.

Tips:

  • Start slowly and practice small movements with both hands you want your taps to be smooth.
  • For you beginners out there don't press to hard on the fretboard it's the impact speed that matters not the stength you depress the fret.
  • Try tapping and fretting as close to the fret wire of the fret above as possible your sound will be more pronounced that way.

Summary

This is the end of part 1 of Joe Satriani. Please comment this article with sugestions for part two or tell me that part one was so bad that I shouldn't write a part two etc. Content will definately include a theoretical analysis of his work and some more techniques.

JAZZ GUITARIST

Jazz Guitarist Frank Vignola Plays Gershwin on New CD Coming April 17

Frank Vignola. Photo by J. Bruce Summers.Frank Vignola’s 12th CD as a leader and his first for Mel Bay Records, Vignola Plays Gershwin (10122CD), is a spirited tribute to George Gershwin, one of America’s greatest composers, Vignola Plays Gershwin will be released through CD stores and online retailers on April 17, 2007.
Frank was joined on the recording by Joe Ascione on drums, Tom Kennedy on bass and Corey Christiansen on guitar. While typically a Benedetto player, Frank went with a Saga Blueridge flattop guitar for this project.

Vignola Plays Gershwin features 14 of the composer’s most popular tunes. All of the tracks were laid down on a single day (July 21, 2006) at Music Masters Recording Studio in St. Louis, Missouri.

The actual studio time was around four hours, which helped to give the project the crisp sound of a CD that seemed to be waiting to be made. After the session, Tom Kennedy remarked that the music was just flowing out of the instruments. No more than two takes were needed for any of the tunes. The pace of the session was especially impressive because it was the first time Frank and Corey had played together, not to mention the first time Frank and Tom had even met.

Vignola Plays GershwinThe CD was produced by William Bay, president of Mel Bay Publications, who helped Frank with the challenge of choosing songs from the more than 1000 compositions in the Gershwin catalog. They decided to focus on the most popular tunes, reasoning that Frank’s unique style would bring new life to familiar standards such as “Summertime” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me”.

A popular Mel Bay author, Frank is also featured on two previous DVDs for Mel Bay Records: Bucky Pizzarelli: Favorite Solos featuring Frank Vignola (21225DVD) and Frank Vignola’s Gypsy Jazz Jam (20087DVD).

LES PAUL

Elitist Les Paul '57 Goldtop Review

The Epiphone Elitist Les Paul '57 Goldtop Electric Guitar has a classic metallic antique gold finish that's dazzling under the stage lights. The original hard maple top, bookmatched mahogany back, and set mahogany neck provide the Epi Elitist Les Paul with the classic feel and resonance of the widely sought-after '57 Goldtop.

Sound: I play rhythm and lead with blues style bends and vibrato. I like very heavey picks (> 1mm) and use 0.010-0.046 D'Addario strings. I prefer as staright a neck as possible (minimal relief) and not too low action (4/64ths at 12th fret). I really like the sound of this guitar. Compared to my American Stratocaster Plus with Lace-Sensor Gold single coil pickups, it has a more full (rounder) sound and a hotter output. The two pickups are quite different sounding. The Bridge pickup has bite and enough brightness for clear power chords and the neck pickup is thick enough for browner lead tones. I also like the combination setting for clean playing as it's a good compromise between dark and bright. The sustain is very good as well. The volume and tone controls are very effective and the changes not too drastic. I've had a Peavey Bravo 112 for 13 years (2-channel, 22 watt, all tube amp with EL84's) and this guitar sounds great compared to others I've jammed with. I'm considering purchasing some authentic Gibson Classic Humbuckers (or Buck-Bursters) for this guitar to take it to the top. it was really a top of the line Les Paul.

Features:
  • book-matched mahogany body with quarter-sawn mahogany neck.
  • The top is solid, rock maple with cream binding all around.
  • The neck has a 24-3/4" scale,
  • 22 medium jumbo frets, and a rosewood fingerboard with Standard trapezoid inlays.
  • The nut is 1-11/16" in width and is made of bone.
  • The tuners are grover as is the ABR-1 bridge and tailpiece.
  • It has the standard 2-volume, 2-tone control layout and Gibson-made 50SR/60ST humbucking pickups (with chrome covers).

AMPLIFIER

Crate Palomino V32 Tube Amplifier

In the early days of live and recorded music, small combo amplifiers were all that were available to the guitar players of the world. Most of these initial amplifiers did not even break the 35 watt barrier until the need arose for large arena shows. With these large venues came the creation of amplifiers boasting 100 watts of ear spliting power (or more).

While these large scale amplifiers have become a mainstay for big shows, they are still considered by many engineers and players to be too big for the studio. Most people familiar with tube amplifiers know that the amplifier needs to reach a certain gain threshold before the tone really begins to shine. This is why quality low watt tube amplifiers are more appropirate for recording since it is easier to drive them to their maximum potential in smaller rooms at volumes that won't shatter glass.

I recently received a Crate 30 watt Palomino V32 class “A” tube amplifier for review. While it may still be a little bigger than most engineers would like, it is a good all-purpose amp for the player who is gigging at small venues or micing up to a P.A. in addition to studio work, and only wants to deal with one amplifier. Read on for our thoughts on the Palomino!

The Palomino Series is a very sharp looking amplifier line. Covered in cream colored tolex, with gold hardware and trim, the V32 exudes a vintage vibe that evokes thoughts of classic rock. The brass top mounted control panel with its gold dome knobs looks very classy and just begs you to dial in your favorite tones. A quick look at the control panel revealed straight forward features for a this two channel amp. There is a single input jack for your guitar. Clean volume, Overdrive Gain and Gain Level knobs give you the flexibility to control the separate channels independently. Both channels however share the same three band EQ for Low, Mid, and High frequencies. A boost button gives you 10dB of boost at 900Hz for those times you need to punch through a heavy mix. In addition, the presence button adds to the tone shaping feature set, especially for generating well defined lead tones. The top panel is rounded out by an illumination lamp when power is on as well as the standby and power switches.

The Palomino V32 weighs in at 44 lbs, and has a fairly small footprint making it perfect for small stages. In fact, the only down side I found during my inspection was that the tubes are hard to access, making tube changes challenging when the time comes to replace or mod the amp.

Features at a glance:

• Class A 30W
• 4 - El-84 power tubes
• 3 - 12AX7A preamp tubes
• Spring reverb
• Clean/overdrive switch
• Boost switch
• Bass, mid, treble, and presence tone controls
• 12" speaker
